Silent hunter 5 mods6/1/2023 As you can see from the other reviews here, it was criticised by many for many reasons. Many felt it was an unfair way to treat legimate users of the game, because players suffered disrupted gameplay and the felt controlled and dependent on Ubisoft's servers. Many players felt it infringed on their rights.Īnother problem with the original release was with the game itself. It was clearly unfinished and broken, with many bugs and many things not fully implemented. Game design had also suffered in that it was not really a simulation in the spirit of earlier versions in the series, namely Silent Hunter 3, and Silent Hunter 4. Silent Hunter 5 had a lot of instruments, controls and functions stripped from it, giving it a dumbed-down gamey feel, perhaps in an attempt to pander to a broader, more causal market. I'm pleased to say that the current 1.2 version of the game has now had the invasive DRM removed, and many of the bugs fixed. If the original release had been half as good as version 1.2 is, I'm sure we would not have seen all these complaints! But what has transformed this game more than anything is the work by the "modders" - enthusiasts who modify and add to the original code of the program to produce enhancements. The enhancements provided for SH5 are unbelievably good, significantly improving this game and making it a more serious simulation. Of the series, SH5, patched to 1.2 and modded with the best mods, is a worthy successor to the previous games in the series. And the modifications continue to be developed as I write. One can only wonder at the potential the future now holds for this game. If you buy this game, which I now recommend, then make sure you join the forum at SUBSIM and download the mods for it. It can be quite confusing knowing which mods to install, because at the moment they are not all integrated into an easy-to-install "mega-mod" but you'll get plenty of help from the forum and everything can be downloaded from there for free. I had mine up and running within two days. I echo what many others have said in reviews already posted. Steer clear of this monster - it is a disaster. I skipped SH4, but I did play and enjoyed SH3. I didn't like having to micromanage the crew, but it was not a show stopper. It seems to have been written to provide "immersion" and "realism". The instructions provided are little more than a glorified leaflet, and there are no tutorials installed along with the game. What did the trick for me was to install a version of the Uplay installer someone had uploaded to a Steam "Guide" page, I'll see if I can find that. Even now, the damn auto-connect to the Uplay servers from the vanilla Steam copy (which is necessary to complete first time set up of the game) did not work right for me. Note: in the past it was apparently a real hassle to try to get that mod to work with the Steam version of the game. Ubisoft should give those guys who made all those mods and the compilation a cut! I would've never bought the game had I not seen some pretty compelling info about the mod and yeah, that mod makes that game "worth it." Especially at the $10 it is now being sold for on Steam. What I can say is: With the Wolves of Steel mod installed it is FANTASTIC! I don't know for sure because I didn't play it much vanilla. Apparently at release it was a nightmare and even now the vanilla game is probably fairly lacking. This game has suffered a lot of bad press probably deservedly so.
